Information Centre - SPARColl

The BHFNC is part of the Scottish Physical Activity Research Collaboration (SPARColl). SPARColl is a three-year project commissioned in July 2005 by NHS Health Scotland and hosted by the University of Strathclyde. SPARColl aims to promote excellence in research and provide an evidence base relating to physical activity and health. The SPARColl programme of work is being undertaken in two phases (Phase I Aug 2005 - April 2006 and Phase II May 2006 - July 2008). Work undertaken in Phase I included a systematic review of international walking interventions and mapping of existing walking programmes in Scotland.

The SPARColl vision is to be internationally recognised for excellence in research relating to physical activity and health. By combining extensive research knowledge, the team SPARColl is working to attain this vision. The SPARColl aims and objectives are clearly defined as follows:

Aims
1)      To contribute to the evidence base on physical activity and health by evaluating the effectiveness of specific practice-based interventions – such as Paths to Health.
2)      To disseminate the above evidence amongst practitioners, policy makers and academics in appropriate ways and to facilitate the use of evidence to inform policy and practice.
3)      To raise the profile of research on health-related physical activity in Scotland with the academic community, research funding bodies, policy makers and practitioners.
Objectives:
1)      To assess the effectiveness of interventions in walking and in particular the Paths to Health project.
2)      To generate appropriate reports, materials and peer reviewed publications aimed at practitioners, policy makers and the academic community.

3)      Provide leadership within the networks of academics, physical activity practitioners, policy makers and public health specialists.

The SPARColl team have extensive knowledge and experience of physical activity related research and policy. The team is made up of academic staff from University of Strathclyde, University of Glasgow, Edinburgh University, University of Oxford and the BHF National Centre for Physical Activity and Health & Loughborough University.
