Regional physical activity mapping
Physical activity cuts across a range of different policy areas, such as culture, health, transport, environment and education. At present, no single agency or organisation has a primary role or responsibility for taking forward the sport, exercise and physical activity agenda. Consequently, a multitude of projects, initiatives and/or strategies often take place in any one locality and it is often difficult to obtain a picture of the nature and extent of what's happening. The BHF National Centre for Physical Activity and Health (BHFNC) has been working in partnership with various regions to conduct an extensive audit of what's happening around sport, exercise and physical activity. To date, the BHFNC has conducted mapping activity in the following regions:
- East Midlands
- West Midlands
- East
- Yorkshire and the Humber
- North East
Case Studies
As part of the mapping projects, a number of case studies in each region have been identified. These examples have been selected as examples of good practice based on the following criteria:
- Clearly specified aims and objectives
- Evidence of innovation
- Clear rationale for the project, specifically based on local evidence of need
- Clear explanation of the nature of the intervention
- Evidence of the effectiveness of the project
- Outline of how the project will be sustained long-term.
- Evidence of partnership work
Physical activity mapping in the East Midlands
A comprehensive mapping of physical activity projects in the East Midlands region has been carried out twice by a team from the BHF National Centre for Physical Activity and Health. Both sets of mapping have uncovered a large number of initiatives happening across the region as well as showing how the initiatives have changed from the initial mapping to the follow up. The results of the mapping are now available and can be searched by geographical area, target group and by settings. Project Managers can also add or modify details of their initiatives to the database.
