The Institute of Sport and Leisure Policy is one of a number of research institutes identified within the university and its specific focus is on the theoretically informed analysis of sport and leisure policy. The Institute was established in 1990 with five years of core funding from the Sports Council, and was renamed in 1997 to reflect more closely its current focus. Output from the Institute covers a wide spectrum ranging from theoretical analyses and reflections on current policy and emerging issues through to commissioned research and consultancy from a broad range of national and international, public, commercial and voluntary sector organisations involved in policy making.
Institute of Youth Sport
The Institute of Youth Sport (IYS) was established in 1998. It is a research and development centre which draws together staff with a common interest in the welfare, education, performance and development of young people participating (or being encouraged to participate) in sport and physical education. The mission of the Institute is to provide the best in education, training, research and development for the benefit of all young people.
Since its inception the IYS has worked closely with the Youth Sport Trust (YST), a national charitable organisation set up in 1994 to develop and implement quality physical education and sport programmes for all young people. The YST also has its headquarters on the Loughborough campus.
Centre for Olympic Studies and Research
The Centre for Olympic Studies and Research (COSR) was established in 2004. The aim of COSR is to promote and conduct academic research into Olympism and the Olympic Movement, and to disseminate an understanding of the ideals and values expressed through Olympism. COSR ensures the achievement of these goals via working in partnership with the British Olympic Foundation, and various UK sport organisations in academic, cultural, educational and social scientific fields.
Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport
The Peter Harrison Foundation was founded by Peter Harrison in April 1999 to provide people with the key stepping stones to self-development, creation of choice, confidence building and self reliance using education and sport as the vehicles. It represents a unique development in the promotion of opportunities for disabled people in physical activity and sport.
