Going for Gold - establishing a gold standard for cycling

Sustrans has released a report calling for the Government to introduce more stringent measures in schools to encourage children to cycle more. Currently, just 2% of children cycle regularly, despite the recommendations from health experts that the easiest way to increase activity in children is to include walking and cycling in their daily routine.

Sustrans is calling for a nationwide gold standard for school cycling that aims to:

  • get more than a quarter of pupils regularly cycling to school
  • include cycling in the school curriculum
  • have a member of staff to champion a cycling culture
  • provide secure bike storage.

The gold standard aims to create a minimum level of cycling education and facilities in every school in the UK.
