Evaluation - Reports and Previous Projects

Previous evaluation projects which the BHFNC have been invovled in:

Evaluation of the Regional physical activity mapping

Physical activity cuts across a range of different policy areas, such as culture, health, transport, environment and education. At present, no single agency or organisation has a primary role or responsibility for taking forward the sport, exercise and physical activity agenda. Consequently, a multitude of projects, initiatives and/or strategies often take place in any one locality and it is often difficult to obtain a picture of the nature and extent of what's happening. The BHF National Centre for Physical Activity and Health (BHFNC) has been working in partnership with various regions to conduct an extensive audit of what's happening around sport, exercise and physical activity. To date, the BHFNC has conducted mapping activity in the following regions:

  • East Midlands
  • West Midlands
  • East
  • Yorkshire and the Humber
  • North East

After the mapping project was complete the BHFNC conducted an evaluation of the project. Click here to view the full evaluation report.

User Evaluation of the BHF Workplace Health Activity Toolkit (WHAT)

In 2001, the BHF started to develop its own Workplace Health Activity initiative.  Its aim was to increase the activity levels of people during, at and after work, in order to reduce the modifiable risk factor of physical inactivity in heart health.  More specifically, the objectives were:

  • To raise awareness of physical activity and heart health;
  • To promote simple healthy activity practices;
  • To prepare a toolkit of ideas to encourage and support more companies and organisations to promote and integrate physical activity into the workplace;
  • To complement health and safety policies and other health promotion initiatives, such as healthy eating and stress management;
  • To support the achievement of Health at Work programmes and awards;
  • To identify and target specific groups and encourage joined up working on a national and local level;
  • To complement national initiatives such as Travel Plans, Regeneration Programmes and Physical Activity Strategies.

Following extensive developmental research and piloting, the Workplace Health Activity Toolkit (or WHAT pack) was launched in March 2003.

The launch was followed up by a series of promotional seminars around the country, at which over 300 organisations were represented.

The objectives of this qualitative ‘User Evaluation’ project were to find out how accessible, usable, and effective the WHAT pack has been so far.  The objectives of the project were:

1. To identify a sample of approximately 20 users of the WHAT pack from a range of occupational settings.

2. To conduct semi-structured telephone interviews with these pack users in order to explore user views of the pack in terms of:

  • Accessibility of the resource
  • Usability of the pack as a stand-alone resource
  • Effectiveness as a stimulus to organisational change
  • To identify any aspects of pack content or presentation that could enhance the accessibility, usability and effectiveness of the pack.
