Evaluation

What is evaluation?

Evaluation is a systematic process to determine the effectiveness of an initiative in terms of achieving its aims and objectives.

Why is evaluation important?

Evaluation is an important component of any initiative as it provides information about the effectiveness/ impact of a programme. This includes what worked and didn’t work, as well as the underlying reasons why. This can lead to improvements in programme design and implementation as well as improved usefulness of programme resources.

The BHFNC recognises the importance of evaluation in order to identify best practice and inform policy. The Centre is committed to conducting high quality evaluations in order to provide practitioners with practical, useful resources for the promotion of physical activity. The BHFNC is involved in the evaluation of health promotion interventions at both the regional and national level.

How to evaluate?

There are many different approaches to evaluation, and each approach or perspective may require different principles and methods. The type of evaluation undertaken will depend on what you want to learn about the initiative. This should be decided in partnership with all the stakeholders involved in the project. Having clear project objectives and knowing what questions you want to answer will help with the planning and implementation of the evaluation. The links below provide a brief introduction to the types, methods, and various designs of evaluation projects.
