Evaluation - Evaluation Methods

Evaluation Methods

There are two main approaches to data collection, quantitative (numeric data) and qualitative (narrative data). The type of evaluation methods utilised will be influenced by a number of factors including the purpose of the evaluation, the size of the population involved, and available time and resources.

Quantitative Methods

Include questionnaires, and objective measurements (BMI, participant counts, pedometer counts). Quantitative data are analysed using statistical techniques to determine the strength of relationships between variables.

Qualitative Methods

Include key informant interviews and focus group discussions. Qualitative techniques can be used gain a more in-depth understanding of peoples feelings and their perceptions of an intervention, as well as provide a context for the intervention. Qualitative data is usually transcribed and coded, and presented in themes.

Mixed Methods Approach

Utilising multiple sources of evidence can facilitate a more holistic and in-depth evaluation. Combining different data collection methods can be used to cross-check and validate findings.
